Something I have been doing at school.....

Ok, so I thought I would share a little about what I have been doing at school since that is a BIG part of my life at this time. Over the last two semester me and a group of 4 other fabulous girls developed a resource workshop for a very impoverished community in Santa Ana, CA. It was an amazing experience and we had such a great time. The presentation was actually in Spanish since all the parents spoke only Spanish but I understood a little. We presented these parents with resources of all types in there community within a 5 mile radius since many don't have transportation. We also empowered them with an advocacy tool that explained how to call a resource agency to ask for services. We only expected to have about 30 parents attend and we were amazed and humbled when over 60 parents showed up!!! It was crowded but so worth it. The parents were so appreciative and were eager to take extra packets of information home to friends and family. We also provided free childcare for which some of our dear friends helped us out by volunteering their time to do this. It was a great experience and really got me interested and excited about the more macro side of social work. I was soooooo lucky to have such wonderful peers to work with on this project, especially since we had to work together for 2 semesters!

We had to go out into the community we were going to serve so here we are in downtown Santa Ana, California. It was interesting talking to the homeless people and gaining a different perspective of what it means to be homeless.

This is just a beautiful building in downtown Santa Ana.

The one member of our group that spoke Spanish was awesome because she had to give the entire presentation on her own, she rocked and she was 7 months pregnant!!!

Providing free childcare allowed more parents to attend and it was lots of fun having over 40 children in such a small room, good thing it was only an hour long presentation!

Hey hey Shawni! I found your blog through Jennessa's. Hope you don't mind my blog-stalking. :) Anyway, your project sounds amazing. Very cool. I am still in the market for a masters and I haven't completely decided which way to go. Social work may be an option. Looks like you are enjoying it. I'll try to keep in touch. Take care!
